As I sit here with my Estrog in hand still savoring its sweet smell, wanting to linger just awhile longer in the past, the present is tugging at my heart hinting at secrets yet to be revealed by HaShem. It's as if He is saying,"Come lets begin again", it's another chance to hear a little more of what I have to say, another chance to walk out what you hear, another chance to show the world Who I Am.
The name Genesis comes from the Greek word meaning beginning, but the Hebrew title Bereshit literally means head. More than half of human history is covered in its scant fifty chapters. I have always been drawn to HaShem's creation, it is where I feel closest to Him. To catch a glimpse of Him in a sunrise or in an eagle in flight is enough to take your breath away.
Chazal say that HaShem breathed or spoke creation into being using the Alef-Bet. It brings to mind the Haftorah for this week. It is taken from Isaiah 42:5, "Thus says G*D the L*RD, Who created the heavens and stretched them forth, Who spread forth the earth and its offspring, Who gives breath to the people on it, And spirit to those who walk in it."
In our morning prayers we say Baruk She-Amar, Blessed is He who spoke. Beloved as we begin the Torah cycle, know that we don't do it alone HaShem is with us and He has given us each other to love and encourage each step of the way.
Blessed be He who spoke and the world sprang into existence; blessed be He ! (and blessed be His name).
Blessed be the Maker of Creation! (blessed be He and blessed be His name).
Blessed be He who speaketh and doeth; blessed be He who decreeth and performeth !
Blessed be He who hath mercy upon the earth; blessed be He who hath mercy upon His creatures!
Blessed be He who payeth a good reward to those that fear Him ! (blessed be He and blessed be His name).
Blessed be He who liveth forever and endureth for eternity; blessed be He who redeemeth and delivereth !
(Blessed be He who removeth darkness and bringeth light; blessed be He before whom there is no injustice nor forgetfulness, no regard of countenance nor taking of bribes.
Blessed be He who gave to His people Israel the inheritance of Sabbath rest ! [On Sabbath.]
Blessed be He who gave festivals of gladness to His people of Israel ! [On festivals.]
Blessed be He who gave to His people Israel this day of memorial ! (On New-Year's Day.]
Blessed be He who gave to His people Israel the inheritance of rest and of forgiveness and of atonement for the erring; blessed be He ! (and blessed be His name!) [On the Day of Atonement.]).
Blessed art thou, O L*rd our G*d, King of the world, O G*d and merciful Father; praised by the mouth of Thy people, lauded and glorified by the tongue of Thy pious ones [Ḥasidim], and Thy worshipers! As we praise Thee, O L*rd our G*d, with the songs of David Thy servant, with praises and psalms we will magnify, laud, and glorify Thee, and make mention of Thy name, and proclaim Thee our King, O our G*d, the Only One, the One who liveth throughout all eternity; O King, praised and glorified be Thy great name for ever and ever. Blessed art Thou, O L*rd, the King who is extolled with praises.
HaShem breathed creation into being and He is breathing life into His creation still, may we all be blessed with His breath of life.
